Job Description:

One of the key responsibilities of a Dog Training Specialist at Petco is achieving the budgeted Dog Training sales goals. This requires driving sales and engaging partners across the Pet Care Center.

Your role as a dog trainer requires you to apply Petco's Positive Dog Training policy and curriculum in the training process. The approach emphasizes utilizing humane methodologies while still instilling excellent communication skills between the pet parents and their dogs. You must prioritize Health & Wellness throughout the training process, ensuring that pet parents understand the training process, and that the working environment is safe and enjoyable for the dogs.

• Negative reinforcement techniques are not used in the Petco Positive Dog Training Program, so pet parents can be confident that their dogs are not experiencing unnecessary stress and fear during training sessions.
• Protect the safety of all individuals involved in training sessions, from the dogs and their owners to the staff at Petco.
• By maintaining ethical standards in all interactions with dogs, pet parents, and the Pet Care Center's partners, we can ensure their safety and well-being.
• Follow through with the duties enumerated in the Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP) with conviction.
• Punishment methods like hitting, shouting, and physical reprimands only instill fear in dogs while teaching them nothing. By eliminating punishment from training, pet parents create an environment that fosters positive behavior and eliminates negative ones.
• Work collaboratively with Pet Care Center partners from various departments to identify new opportunities for community partnerships and grow the dog training business.
• Influence without authoritative control by using effective listening skills to coach dog owners in a manner that motivates successful training results.
• Enhance your presentation skills by delivering a compelling message that is well-organized and easy to follow.
• Stay well informed about new products and services and initiate conversations with customers to explore their unique benefits.
• Timeliness is crucial in Petco's Positive Canine Training Instructor Program and accompanying orientation.
• This role involves maintaining accurate dog training calendars that are in line with predetermined regulations and expectations.
• To operate efficiently, it is necessary to maintain a clean and organized Dog Training area and stay on top of equipment maintenance, as outlined in the guidelines and policies.

Other Essential Duties:

• Provide exceptional and polite assistance to all Petco clientele by evaluating their requirements and recommending dog training products based on vast familiarity.
• Foster and encourage the conformity to established safety and security protocols.

Basic Qualifications:

• The job posting highlights the need for candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Consistent with Petco's standards, new hires are expected to complete the company's Positive Dog Training Instructor Program in a timely manner.
• Able to skillfully lead team-building sessions, enabling individuals to work collaboratively and effectively.
• Skilled in the utilization of technology and capable of resolving technical glitches.
• Proficiency in computer usage and conducting online research activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

• The most desirable certifications for this role include CPDT-KA and KPA-CTP from the Karen Pryor Academy.
• An applicant who has prior experience teaching positive reinforcement methods for training dogs in a classroom or group setting would have an advantage in securing this position.

Work Environment:

As a Pet Care Center employee, most of your duties will be performed indoors, but some outdoor responsibilities might include briefly stepping outside to receive merchandise or balance stock.
